Outdoor Advocacy Project: Building a Digital Hub for Outdoor Advocacy

The Outdoor Advocacy Project needed a user-centered strategy to better engage and educate outdoor enthusiasts on conservation efforts. By improving information architecture, streamlining web design, and refining content strategy, we transformed the platform into an intuitive, high-impact resource for environmental advocacy.

Project Overview

The Outdoor Advocacy Project aimed to connect outdoor enthusiasts with accessible resources to protect public lands. However, its existing website lacked clarity and engagement. I led a UX and content strategy overhaul, reorganizing site architecture and improving user pathways to create a more compelling, action-driven platform. The result was a highly navigable and visually engaging resource hub that empowered users to participate in advocacy efforts more effectively.

The Challenge: Low Engagement & Accessibility Issues

The Outdoor Advocacy Project aimed to mobilize outdoor enthusiasts to take conservation action, but the existing site struggled to engage users effectively. Key challenges included:

  • Scattered & Unstructured Content – Advocacy resources were difficult to find and not user-friendly.

  • Lack of Clear Calls to Action – Visitors weren’t sure how to get involved or take the next step.

  • Overwhelming Information Density – Key messages got lost, leading to lower engagement.

To turn the site into an intuitive, action-driven resource hub, it needed a complete UX and content strategy refresh to simplify navigation and improve accessibility.

The Solution: A UX Strategy to Drive Engagement and Action

To transform the Outdoor Advocacy Project into a more engaging, accessible, and action-driven platform, I focused on improving navigation, content clarity, and user engagement.

🗂️ Content & IA Restructuring – Organized advocacy tools and educational resources into an intuitive, easy-to-navigate framework.
📢 Clearer Calls to Action – Refined messaging and UI elements to guide users toward conservation efforts and community involvement.
📖 Simplified Content Presentation – Improved readability and accessibility to ensure key information was digestible and actionable.
📱 Mobile & Performance Enhancements – Optimized for mobile usability to support users engaging with the platform on the go.

With these improvements, the Outdoor Advocacy Project became a clear, structured, and action-oriented platform that empowers users to support environmental conservation.

The Outcome: A More Accessible, Action-Driven Advocacy Platform

The new platform increased engagement, usability, and clarity, empowering users to take meaningful conservation actions.

📖 Better Resource Accessibility – Simplified content structure made advocacy tools easier to find.
📢 Higher Engagement in Conservation Efforts – More intuitive pathways guided users to take action.
🌱 Stronger Community Involvement – The improved experience made it easier for users to connect with advocacy initiatives.
📊 Optimized for Mobile & On-the-Go Users – A responsive design allowed users to engage from any device.

Client Feedback

My team and I are sitting down later today to comb through the full site and provide a final round of feedback but first I just have to gush about how beautiful this site looks. I keep toggling back and forth between the old site and the new one and my jaw is on the floor at this absolute GLOW UP.

Project Team

This project integrated UX strategy, information architecture, and content design to create an intuitive and engaging platform for outdoor advocacy and conservation.

Lessons Learned:

This project emphasized the importance of user-friendly content presentation in nonprofit and advocacy spaces. My key takeaways include:

  • Content accessibility drives engagement – Simplifying navigation and structuring information intuitively made it easier for users to find and explore conservation resources.

  • Clear calls to action increase participation – Adding strategically placed CTAs encouraged users to get involved with advocacy efforts.

  • Community-driven experiences create impact – Providing user-friendly educational tools empowered outdoor enthusiasts to take action beyond the website.

For future projects, I’d prioritize scalable engagement frameworks, ensuring that advocacy platforms can evolve alongside their communities and continue driving meaningful impact over time.
